Eddie Redmayne: I Could Have Played Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey
Eddie Redmayne doesn't understand why E.J. James was so against him possibly playing Christian Grey in the movie adaptation of her mommy porn bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey.
During a press junket for Les Miserables, a journalist asked Redmayne if he'd ever audition to play the sex-obsessed mogul. After he said yes, James shot the idea down in a very public way.
"She took to her Twitter feed to go, 'Under no circumstances!'" Redmayne remembers in the new issue of Variety. "It was like, all right, all right! Am I that bad? I can put a whip in my hand. I can get all kinky, can't I? Apparently not."
Funny enough, Redmayne's pal Jamie Dornan landed the role. The two were in their early 20s when they first came to Hollywood and hung out with other unknowns like Andrew Garfield and Tom Sturridge. "We used to go to the Standard Hotel in West Hollywood, and split a sandwich between us because that meant we could get cheaper parking," Redmayne remembered. "We'd swim and play table tennis for hours."
Fast forward to today—Redmayne is getting lots of Oscar buzz for his portrayal of physicist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.
"The blogosphere is salivating over the prospect of him competing with another classical trainer British actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays World War II code breaker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game," Variety writer Ramin Setoodeh notes in his Redmayne cover story.

The Fifty Shades of Grey Reshoots Now Include Sexy Makeouts
Now that we're only four months away from Fifty Shades of Grey's release date (and still sweating that trailer), it's all Grey all the time. Though initial filming wrapped months ago, Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson showed up back on set for reshoots
this week — and made out! It seems like a good time to check these out,
and revisit the rest of the sexy set pictures, which also feature the
pair shooting key scenes like their coffee-shop rendezvous, a little bit
of kissing.

Personal Quotes (13)
I'm probably the worst person for 'Men's Health' to interview.
I guess I'm just lucky with my genes.
I can't really do the running on hard ground that I used to do. Instead I go swimming as often as possible.
Fairytales are stories that span every generation and they've been around for a long time.
Everyone likes a bit of competition.
It's funny when you know you're playing two characters and you're
aware of how you have to play each one into your performance of the
other. You're constantly at the back of your mind thinking and it all
gets a bit confusing.
I've always needed to bulk up, so until the modeling took off I
was ramming Big Macs down my throat and doing plenty of bodyweight work.
I'm over the Big Macs now, but I'll still drop down and do my press ups
whenever I find the time.
Because I used to play a lot of sport, I've always been in decent
enough shape. When I used to get asked to do a bit of body work before a
photo shoot I'd lie and say, 'Yeah, I'm going to the gym.' I literally
never did anything.
It's not like I cleaned up with girls. I always looked young and I was very small; I hated being 'cute.'
As a viewer, I don't respond well to actors doing more than they
need to tell a story. I get really thrown by that, and pissed off.
They're doing lots of things, but they could just stand there and say
the lines, and it would tell the story in a far more pleasing way.
I don't think Paul Spector, from The Fall
(2013) is that bad of a husband. I think he shows good qualities,
despite the fact that he hunts and kills innocent women. But I want to
show how regular these guys can be.
I'm still auditioning. I don't really have choices in the material
I get. So I have to make the choices in the way I play the characters.
And I'm happy to get a chance to play Christian Gray.
I don't like my physique. Who does? I was a skinny guy growing up, and I still feel like that same skinny kid.
